CourseDescription/Objective:
Thegoalofthiscourseisto familiarizethestudentswiththeEarth’sclimatesystem and provide themwith ascientificfoundationof climatechangeand anintroductionto climate modelsprojections bygivingthemabroadbackgroundin themainconcepts andtoolsof climatescience.Itfocuseson fundamental physicalprocessesthatshape the climatesystem
(e.g.componentsoftheclimatesystem,forcingsandfeedbacks,globalenergybudget, greenhousegases,atmosphericand oceaniccirculation, precipitationresponse,landsurface processes,volcanicandsoilaerosols,Carbon cycle,ENSO,Monsoons...) andonevidence ofclimate change fordistantand recentpast.In particular,thestudentswilllearn howthe climatesystemworks;whatarethe factorsthatcauseclimate tochangeacrossdifferenttime scalesandhowtheyinteract; howandwhenclimate haschangedinthedistant and recent past;how climatemodels areusedtomakepredictionsabout futureclimate;andthepossible consequencesofclimatechangeforthe Earth (e.g.temperaturechange,precipitation variations,occurrencesand intensityofextremeevents(heatwaves,droughts,floods),sea levelchangeandoceanacidification,water availability,vegetationand agro-climatezones shiftsetc.).
Attheendofthe course,thestudentswillbe abletodemonstrate astrongunderstandingof theclimatesystem,evaluatethevariousfactorsthatcauseclimate change,describehow pastclimatescontribute toourcurrentunderstandingofclimatechange,andexplain the consequences,risks,anduncertaintiesofclimatechange.Finallytheywillbe exposedto differentclimatechangeproblemsandare expectedtoapplysomeofmethodsintroduced

during classtosolvethem.Forexample, theywillpickasector (agriculture, waterresources, ecosystemsandbiodiversity,landuse,etc.) and discusshowclimatechangeislikelygoingto impactit.
